Often the focus of our politics is the Central Government, however, most of the work is done by the States. Today we look at the latest RBI report and see how each of the States have performed since 2014 March. This gives us a sense of the likely anti-incumbency in the State. Data is available until 2016-17 for most States. Let us begin with agriculture first

This is the sector that affects the largest segment of voters

Between 2013-14 and 2016-17 (Ranked) - 10 M plus Pop States only

1. MP (BJP)

2. AP (Alliance)

3. Chhattisgarh (BJP)

4. Bihar (Alliance)

5. Odisha (Regional)

6. UP (Regional)

7. Karnataka (Congress)

8. Punjab (Alliance)

9. Haryana (BJP)

10. Telangana (Regional)

11. Jharkhand (BJP)

12. Gujarat (BJP)

13. Tamil Nadu (Regional)

14. Maharashtra (BJP)

15. Rajasthan (BJP)

16. Kerala (Congress-Left)

17. Delhi (Regional)

Best performing parties on Agriculture

1. Alliances

2. Regional

3. BJP

4. Congress

Inspite of our apparent discomfort for alliances, it looks like two parties coming together do a better job of agriculture than single party monopolies.

Shivraj Chouhan is extremely comfortable with about 52% growth in just 3 years on Agriculture. While Raman Singh is ranked 3rd, the growth is a more moderate 30%. CBN for all the criticism closes at good 37%.

In case of the Congress, it got hammered in Kerala and in rural Karnataka. AIADMK is likely to be in big trouble in 2019 after having scraped through in 2016. Gujarat rural has already given a scare to the BJP in 2017.

Both Maharashtra and Rajasthan are scraping at the bottom on agriculture and are likely to give big trouble to the BJP in 2019.

Let us look at the services sector next. This is the biggest portion of the economy

Between 2013-14 and 2016-17 (Ranked) - 10 M plus Pop States only

1. Jharkhand (BJP)

2. Telangana (Regional)

3. Andhra (Alliance)

Best performing parties on Services, agriculture rank in bracket

1. Alliances (1)

2. BJP (3)

3. Regional (2)

4. Congress (4)

Once again alliances outperform national parties. BJP does much better on services than agriculture.

While Shivraj Chouhan is extremely strong in agriculture, the service sector is almost at the bottom. Jharkhand leads.

Andhra which was in the top-6 in agriculture is also in the top-6 in the services sector. Bihar too is in the top-6 in both the lists

Overall, the BJP appears to be in a comfortable position in the cities. In theory, alliance parties (which may also involve the BJP) are in a comfortable position. Kerala which was in the bottom-6 in both lists on account of its slower population growth has already voted out its Government.

When one combines both the lists, States that are definitely in trouble include TN, Gujarat and Kerala. Gujarat much more given the fact that population growth in TN and Kerala are much lesser than in Gujarat.

How do States perform when it comes to Industry?

1. Gujarat (BJP)

2. Andhra (Alliance)

3. Chhattisgarh (BJP)

4. MP (BJP)

5. Bihar (Alliance)

6. Rajasthan (BJP)

7. TN (Regional)

8. Maharashtra (BJP)

9. Haryana (BJP)

10. Punjab (Alliance)

11. Jharkhand (BJP)

12. Karnataka (Congress)

13. Telangana (Regional)

14. Kerala (Congress-Left)

15. UP (Regional)

16. Delhi (Regional)

17. Odisha (Regional)

Total BJP= 7

In top 6= 4

In bottom 5 = 0

Total Alliance = 3

In top 6 = 2

In bottom 5 = 0

Total Congress = 2

In bottom 5= 0

Total Regional = 5

In top 6 =0

In bottom 5 = 4

Best performing parties on Industry, agriculture and services rank in bracket

1. BJP (3,2)

2. Alliances (1,1)

3. Congress (4,4)

4. Regional (2,3)

In sum, BJP oriented States are doing way better than other states on Industry, Alliance ruled states are close second. Regional party ruled States are doing very poorly on Industry

When considering all the 3 sectors, it is clear that Alliance Ruled States appear to be delivering the best performance with Andhra Pradesh and Bihar appearing in the top-6 of every single ranking. The most ironic thing is that the TOP performing State in the country - Andhra Pradesh has very high anti-incumbency.

BJP ruled States are doing very well on Industry, above average on Services but very ordinarily on Agriculture. In that sense, the biggest risk for the party will continue to be rural India and not urban India.

Regional parties seem be doing well on agriculture which is really the bulk of the voters. Still, the Government in Odisha is likely to be under the greatest threat after Andhra Pradesh because of poor mining prices (recovered now) and no significant improvement in agriculture. TN and Rajasthan too would not be far away

Short Summary of India's Trade

Japan's per capita went from $ 479 in 1960 to $ 39629 by 1994. In that period,

- Japan's merchandise exports went up from $ 4 Billion to $ 400 Billion

- India's exports went up from $ 1.3 B to $ 25 B

- China had double India's exports in 1960 at $ 2.5B and this went upto $ 121 B. It initially took advantage of the collapse of Eastern European economies and Russia.

- Korea's exports went up from $ 32 million (!!!) to $ 96 Billion

- Malaysia's exports went up from $ 1.2 B to $ 59 B.

In sum, Japan's exports had exploded during that 30 year period

By 2017, the picture changed a bit.

- India's exports went up from $ 25 B in 1994 to 298 B in 2017

- Japan's merchandise exports went up from $ 400 to $ 698 Billion

- China went from $ 121 B to a massive $ 2263 Billion

Korea's exports went up from $ 96 B  to $ 574 Billion

- Malaysia's exports went up from $ 59 B to $ 218 B.

India's best years came when India did well on Exports. Add IT exports outperformance during this period and that is one big reason why India performed well.
